Throwback Thursday photos: Sarasota's City Island, then and now

/

An aerial view of City Island taken in 1956 shows the area also referred to as Ken Thompson Park when the only structure on the peninsula was the radio tower at the east end. The New Pass Bridge to Longboat Key is visible in the lower left. City Island is now home to New Pass Bait Shop, Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium, Save Our Seabirds, The Sarasota Outboard Club, Sarasota Ski-A-Rees, Ken Thompson Park and Boat Ramp, Sarasota Sailing Squadron, Marine Max Marina and The Salty Dog.
