INTERACTIVE: 'Zombie' foreclosures in southwest Florida

/
The 'Great Recession' ushered in a new term for the local real estate lexicon: 'zombie foreclosure.' A zombie foreclosure is a property for which the default process has started, but one which has yet to be repossessed or auctioned by the lender. And there are roughly 1,600 such 'zombie foreclosures' in southwest Florida - one of the highest raw numbers in the United States - with banks sitting on nearly $200 million in real estate assets. The interactive map below highlights the number of 'zombie' foreclosures in approximations of ZIP codes provided by the U.S. Census Bureau. Darker-shaded polygons indicate more foreclosure activity, while clear, bordered areas indicate no activity. Click on a ZIP code area to get an information window containing further details about that zone. Use the tools beneath the map to zero in on an area, or remove/add the color-coding to help your search.
