SARASOTA — The Westcoast Gospel Chorus of Florida held an impromptu concert Thursday at the corner of Lemon and Main streets in downtown Sarasota, prompting dozens of passersby to stop and listen. The concert was meant to draw attention the the Gospel Chorus, which performs several times a week at The Church of Continuous Joy, 403 N. Washington Blvd., Sarasota.

Dr. Henry Porter founded the Gospel Chorus in 1969 in North Sarasota amid the Civil Rights movement’s wane and the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. The Chorus, with Porter and his son, Henry Porter II, often leading the singing, is still going strong 45 years later.
